Cocooning 2.0 or Anchoring - it all about celebrating design!

According to Shauna Levy, co-founder of the Interior Design Show, these are challenging economic times, and celebrating design is more important than ever. Design isn't simply about frivolity, beauty and excess, it's also about providing inspiration, and creating innovative solutions and smarter ways to inhabit the world.

Is understated elegance returning? According to Caroline Tapp-McDougall, "a new class of connoisseurs may well be emerging." Where once we valued "bigger is better", there is a growing interest in cultivating a lasting and discreet more subtle, lower-key approach to design. Statistics show that quality and durability are returning, as is craftsmanship, with well- worn antiques and hand crafted wood products showing up in the homes and offices of the new connoisseur.

Companies that reflect the trends, are answering the needs of Cocooning 2.0 and that means making your home a more comfortable place to be in, a place to reflect and retreat in these uncertain times. It's reworking that awkward all-but-no purpose room, repainting your entire space or retrofitting your home to be more environmentally friendly.

It means finding inspiration, ingenuity and a willingness to compromise when it comes to today's economic uncertainty.

Anchoring - is this the new buzz word?

According to Canadian House & Home magazine at their annual trends breakfast, Lynda Reeves (publisher and founder) reminded everyone that cocooning was born during the last recession (along with cultural phenomena like the VCR and microwave popcorn). And this time around, it could be called ANCHORING. It's all about taking shelter... implying a trend toward making one's shelter cozy and comfortable with items that are of great quality and stand for goodness ... "it's the death of the Consumer and the birth of the Citizen", she announced...

Using Lynda's perspective, Koletic Design is looking forward to the Interior Design Show where they will showcase new designs that offer comfortable, high quality furniture. It's been said that good furniture is art. At Koletic Designs we welcome the discerning citizens who will be anxiously looking for those items of great quality!

New Designs for a New Year

After a hectic end to 2008 we are showing some new designs to welcome the new year.

In our Dining Tables section we have a new base and stretcher design with a beautiful Bubinga dining table.

Bronze glass framed in Bubinga with a stained walnut base is another of my new designs for 2009. This piece is also now featured on our web site.

And finally a commissioned bench with a solid Willow block and fantastic curly Jarrah will make a great place to sit and contemplate the year ahead.

It certainly was One of a Kind!

Thanks to everyone who came to visit us at the One of a Kind Show in Toronto last week. It is amazing to see the reactions of people to our work in person. We were very fortunate to be featured in the main display of the show and also had one of our tables featured in a presentation by Colin McAllister and Justin Ryan of Colin and Justin's Home Heist .

Our new console table design proved to be a big hit. We hope to expand on the concept and bring out a few more interesting pieces based on the design.

One of a Kind Christmas Show and Sale!

It was a frantic few weeks leading up to the show, and it was all worth while!

We are happy to say that we have created a few new exiting designs for a console table, as well as a new twist on our coffee tables. So come on out to the Direct Energy Center, Exhibition Place Toronto and visit us at booth N-52 near the fashion show area.

Along with our new tables we also have our more popular smaller gift ideas in beautiful burls and amazing exotic woods for the holidays.

The Landings Have Landed!

The solid Sapele landings for our client in Forest Hill have finally been placed. Having to oversize the pre-drilled holes to allow for the expansion and contraction of the wood took some time and with the temporary landing removed caused some minor vertigo, but all went to plan.

The wood looked amazing along side the custom glass walls and glass sided steel staircase.

The stair treads are next and we are looking forward to having another completed installation behind us so we can concentrate on the armoir and dining table next up on the schedule.

X Base Table Installed

Our Forest Hill client was able to have their Thanksgiving dinner on their beautiful 10 foot bubinga table with it's highly stylized X base. As part of an overall installation including matching side tables, which may be used as table extensions, and an open stairway.
Stair treads of ribbon sapele with matching handrails add a nice warmth to the steel and glass staircase.
The dining table was a challenging piece, with tapered compound angles on every surface and the sheer size of the materials. Constructed of 3 1/2" ash with pinned tenons the base is made of 4 separate pieces that had to come together as a single unit with sapele center panels in place. A glue up of extreme tolerances with four 30 pound pieces in play was an adventure to say the least.
We expect completion of the stairway with landings and handrails shortly while we move ahead with new ideas for the One Of A Kind show in November and our next major project, an electronics armoire of natural edged sapele.
